Terms of Service
Codex Vivendi is operated by VisSight AB, a Swedish company registered in Gothenburg, Sweden (“we,” “us” or “the Platform”). These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of the Codex Vivendi platform, accessible at codexvivendi.org and related services.
By creating an account, you confirm that you have read, understood and agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Platform.
1. What Codex Vivendi Is
Codex Vivendi is a dual-purpose platform: a tool for your personal legacy and a contributor to a collective record for humanity.
The Platform provides tools to articulate your Life Principles, define your Identity, collect your Favorites and gather Wisdom. Together, these form your Codex, a structured personal legacy artifact. The Platform also provides Groups and Forums where Contributors discuss topics related to the meaning of life.
Every Contributor also participates in the Aspirational Dataset: a pseudonymized, aggregated collection of human values derived from both structured content (your Codex) and unstructured content (your forum posts, group discussions and community interactions). This dataset captures humanity in reflective mode, not reactive mode. Participation in the Aspirational Dataset is a core, inseparable part of the service. It is not a side feature or an optional add-on. This is explained further in Section 5.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years of age to create an account on Codex Vivendi. By registering, you confirm that you are 18 or older. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. If we discover that a Contributor is under 18, we will terminate the account and delete associated data.
3. Account Registration and Security
To use Codex Vivendi, you must create an account with a valid email address, a password, a username (permanent, used in your profile URL) and a display name. You are responsible for:
- Providing accurate registration information
- Maintaining the security of your account credentials
- All activity that occurs under your account
You must not share your account with others, create multiple accounts or impersonate any person. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately at support@codexvivendi.org.
4. Your Content and Intellectual Property
4.1 You Own Your Content
Everything you write on Codex Vivendi (your Life Principles, Identity tags, Favorites, Wisdom entries, forum posts and group discussions) remains your intellectual property. We do not claim ownership of your content.
4.2 License You Grant to Codex Vivendi
By posting content on Codex Vivendi, you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicensable and transferable license to:
- Store, display and distribute your content according to your chosen privacy settings
- Create pseudonymized and aggregated derivative works from your content for inclusion in the Aspirational Dataset (see Section 5). This applies to all content: your Codex (structured data) and your forum posts, group discussions and community interactions (unstructured data)
- Use your content for the technical operation and improvement of the Platform, including AI-assisted analysis, categorization and recommendation features (see Section 10)
- Display excerpts of publicly shared content for promotional purposes (with attribution to your display name, unless you opt out)
4.3 License Scope Matches Your Privacy Settings
The scope of this license for display and distribution corresponds to the visibility level you choose for each piece of content:
- Only Me: We store and display your content to you only.
- My Connections: We display your content to your approved connections.
- All Members: We display your content to all registered Contributors.
- Public: We display your content to anyone on the open web, including people who do not have a Codex Vivendi account. The link to Public content can be shared and opened by anyone who has it.
4.4 Duration of the License
This license remains in effect for as long as your content exists on the Platform. If you delete specific content, the license for that content ends, except that pseudonymized data already aggregated into the Aspirational Dataset cannot be practically extracted or deleted on an individual basis. If you delete your account, we will remove your account and content from the live Platform within 30 days, subject to the same limitation and to the backup and third-party retention described in Section 14.
4.5 Platform Intellectual Property
The Codex Vivendi name, logo, design, software, documentation and all Platform-created content are the intellectual property of VisSight AB. Nothing in these Terms grants you rights to use our branding, trademarks or proprietary materials without written permission.
5. The Aspirational Dataset
5.1 What It Is
The Aspirational Dataset is a pseudonymized, aggregated collection of human values derived from Contributor content on Codex Vivendi. It includes two types of data:
- Structured data: Your Codex content (Life Principles, Identity tags, Favorites, Wisdom entries). This data is organized in a defined format.
- Unstructured data: Your forum posts, group discussions and other community interactions. This data provides context, nuance and cross-cultural insight that enriches the structured data.
Together, these capture humanity in reflective mode: values articulated by people thinking about their legacy and discussing meaning, not reacting to feeds.
5.2 Your Participation Is a Core Part of the Service
Participation in the Aspirational Dataset is a fundamental, inseparable part of using Codex Vivendi. Codex Vivendi is not a private digital notepad. It is defined as a dual-purpose platform: a tool for your personal legacy and a contributor to a collective record for humanity. When you create an account, you enter into an agreement to participate in this mission. We cannot provide the Codex Vivendi experience without processing your pseudonymized contributions for the dataset. This is disclosed to every Contributor before registration.
5.3 Pseudonymization
Before any content enters the Aspirational Dataset, we apply pseudonymization measures. It is important to understand what this process can and cannot do.
We separate your account details (name, email address, display name, identification numbers) from your content before it enters the dataset. Location data is generalized (city-level data may be generalized to country or region). The content is then aggregated with contributions from other Contributors and structured for analysis in a way that is not traceable to individual accounts.
But we do not read, edit or rewrite what you wrote. So if you type a name, an address or any personal detail inside your own writing (for example, “I, John Doe of 123 Maple Street, believe…”), that detail stays in the text and enters the dataset as you wrote it. We cannot catch it for you.
5.4 How the Dataset Is Used
The Aspirational Dataset may be shared with:
- Academic and non-profit organizations for research into human values, ethics and AI alignment
- Commercial AI research organizations under paid licensing agreements, for the purpose of training AI systems that better understand and serve human values
All dataset licensing is governed by separate agreements that require recipients to use the data responsibly and in accordance with our mission. We will never sell raw, identifiable Contributor data.
5.5 Revenue From the Dataset
Revenue from dataset licensing goes to VisSight AB and supports our work, beginning with the development and running of Codex Vivendi. We are a young venture and cannot predict what the future holds. What we can commit to is this: the dataset exists to serve the mission described in these Terms, and we will not sell raw, identifiable Contributor data, whatever else changes.
6. Acceptable Use
6.1 The Core Principle
Content is sovereign. Conduct is governed. This means: what you believe is yours to articulate, no matter how uncomfortable it may make others. All sincere expressions of human values are welcome on Codex Vivendi. We are a record, not a rulebook. We document; we do not judge.
However, how you behave toward other Contributors is subject to community standards. You can hold any belief. You cannot use that belief as justification to harm, harass or threaten others on this Platform.
6.2 Prohibited Conduct
The following behaviors are prohibited on Codex Vivendi:
- Threatening another Contributor with physical harm or violence
- Harassing, stalking or repeatedly sending unwanted communications to another Contributor
- Using hate speech directed at a specific Contributor (as opposed to expressing a general belief or value)
- Impersonating another person or misrepresenting your identity
- Distributing spam, malware or other harmful material
- Attempting to access other Contributors’ accounts or private data
- Using automated tools (bots, scrapers) to access the Platform without written permission
- Uploading content that you do not have the right to share (copyright infringement)
- Using the Platform for any illegal activity under Swedish or applicable law
6.3 Clarification: Beliefs vs. Behavior
To be explicit: a Contributor who holds views that others find offensive is welcome, provided they express those views in their own Codex and engage respectfully in community spaces. A Contributor who uses those views to attack, demean or threaten specific individuals will face moderation. The line is between articulation and aggression.
7. Moderation and Enforcement
7.1 Graduated Approach
We use a graduated moderation process:
- First violation (minor): Written warning. We explain which rule was violated and what behavior needs to change.
- Second violation or serious first offense: Temporary suspension (duration at our discretion, typically 7 to 30 days).
- Repeated violations or severe misconduct: Permanent account termination.
7.2 Immediate Termination
We reserve the right to skip the graduated process and immediately terminate accounts in cases of:
- Credible threats of physical violence
- Distribution of malware or attempts to compromise the Platform
- Confirmed impersonation of another person
- Illegal activity
7.3 Appeals
If you believe a moderation decision was made in error, you may contact us at support@codexvivendi.org. We will review your appeal and respond within 14 days. Our decision on appeal is final.
7.4 Reporting
Contributors may report violations by contacting us at support@codexvivendi.org. We review all reports and take action where appropriate. We do not disclose the identity of reporters to the reported party.
8. Groups and Forums
Contributors may create and manage Groups with Forums for topic-specific discussions. Group Organizers are responsible for the day-to-day management of their Groups, but all Group activity remains subject to these Terms.
Group Organizers may set additional guidelines for their Groups, provided those guidelines do not conflict with these Terms. We encourage Groups to have multiple Organizers for continuity. If all Organizers of a Group become inactive, we may assign new leadership upon request from Group members.
We do not curate or endorse the views expressed in any Group. Groups are autonomous within the boundaries of these Terms.
Dataset inclusion: Content posted in Groups and Forums is included in the Aspirational Dataset under the same terms as all other Contributor content (see Section 5). By participating in community discussions, you contribute to the collective record.
9. Membership and Donations
9.1 Donations
Codex Vivendi accepts voluntary donations to support Platform development and the Beneficial AI mission. A donation is a gift. It does not grant any feature, status or benefit in return. Donations are processed through PayPal. We do not store your payment card details.
If and when a paid membership is introduced, we may decide that donations above a published threshold also grant membership status for a period of time. We will explain this clearly on the Platform at that point.
9.2 Free and Paid Tiers
The Platform is free to use today. If and when we introduce a paid tier, the free tier will provide limited access to Platform features and the paid tier will provide full features and a verified Contributor status. Any pricing will be published on the Platform before it takes effect.
9.3 Payments and Refunds
If and when paid membership exists, payments will be processed through PayPal and we will not store your payment card details. Paid memberships will be non-refundable except where required by applicable consumer protection law (including the EU right of withdrawal within 14 days of purchase, provided you have not yet used the paid features).
9.4 Price Changes
If and when paid membership exists, we may change membership pricing with at least 60 days notice. Price changes will not affect current paid membership periods, and current pricing will always be available on the Platform.
10. AI Use and Transparency
We are honest about where AI helps and where humans lead.
10.1 How We Use AI
We use AI to support the operation and improvement of the Platform in the following ways:
- Platform development: AI-assisted coding and development of Platform features.
- Content analysis and categorization: AI helps group similar content into categories, cluster related themes and maintain the taxonomy of Identity tags and other structured data.
- Recommendations: AI powers features that suggest relevant content from other Contributors (for example, showing you what others have written about similar topics).
- Moderation support: AI assists in flagging potential conduct violations for human review.
- Administrative operations: AI assists with email management, support responses and day-to-day Platform operations.
- Dataset processing: AI assists in the pseudonymization process and in analyzing patterns within the Aspirational Dataset.
10.2 What AI Does Not Do
AI does not generate Contributor content. Your Life Principles, Identity tags, Favorites, Wisdom entries, forum posts and group discussions are always written by you. AI never creates, modifies or rewrites your content. Everything in the Aspirational Dataset comes from humans.
10.3 Changes to AI Use
If our use of AI changes in a material way, we will update this section and notify Contributors.
11. Privacy
Your privacy matters to us. Our Privacy Policy explains in detail what data we collect, why we collect it, how we use it and what rights you have. By using Codex Vivendi, you agree to our data practices as described in the Privacy Policy.
The key points:
- Your content is private by default (“Only Me”) until you choose to share it
- We comply with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as our baseline
- You can request data export or account deletion at any time
- Once aggregated into the dataset, content cannot practically be extracted on an individual basis
- All Contributor content (Codex and community discussions) is subject to pseudonymization for the dataset
12. Disclaimers
12.1 The Platform Is Provided “As Is”
Codex Vivendi is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. We do not guarantee uninterrupted access, error-free operation or that the Platform will meet your specific expectations. We are a small team building something ambitious. We will make mistakes. We will fix them.
12.2 No Professional Advice
Nothing on Codex Vivendi constitutes professional advice (legal, medical, psychological, financial or otherwise). The Platform is a tool for personal reflection and community discussion. If you need professional guidance, please consult a qualified professional.
12.3 Contributor Content
We do not endorse, verify or take responsibility for the accuracy of content created by Contributors. Each Contributor is solely responsible for their own content. Views expressed in Codexes, Groups and Forums are those of individual Contributors, not of Codex Vivendi or VisSight AB.
13. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by Swedish law:
- VisSight AB is not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential or punitive damages arising from your use of the Platform
- Our total liability for any claim related to Codex Vivendi shall not exceed the greater of the amount you have paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim or EUR 50
- We are not liable for the actions, content or behavior of other Contributors
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for any other liability that cannot be excluded under Swedish law.
14. Termination
14.1 By You
You may request deletion of your account at any time by contacting us at support@codexvivendi.org. Before requesting deletion, we recommend using the Platform’s data export feature to download your content.
When you ask us to delete your account, we remove your account and content from the live Platform within 30 days. Some copies remain outside our immediate reach for a limited time or permanently:
- Backups: Backups are stored separately from the live Platform and are overwritten on a rolling schedule (daily backups within 7 days, weekly backups within 6 weeks), after which those copies are gone. We do not use backups as a live record and do not restore deleted accounts from them, except to recover from a technical failure.
- Payment records: Our payment provider (PayPal) holds transaction data under its own legal retention rules, which we do not control.
- Dataset: Pseudonymized content already aggregated into the Aspirational Dataset, or already shared under a dataset license, cannot be traced back and pulled out on an individual basis.
14.2 By Us
We may suspend or terminate your account in accordance with the moderation process described in Section 7. In cases of account termination, we will provide you with an opportunity to export your data before deletion, except where immediate removal is required for safety or legal reasons.
14.3 Effect of Termination
Upon termination, your license to use the Platform ends. Our license to your content ends with respect to content on the live Platform, which we will delete, but continues with respect to pseudonymized data already aggregated into the Aspirational Dataset, subject to the backup and third-party retention described in Section 14.1.
15. Platform Continuity and Shutdown
We are building something meant to outlast us. But we are also honest about uncertainty. If Codex Vivendi ever needs to shut down, we commit to the following:
- At least 6 months advance notice to all Contributors
- The Platform’s data export feature will remain available during the notice period so Contributors can download their own content
- The pseudonymized Aspirational Dataset transferred to a mission-aligned archive or institution for preservation
- All remaining personal data deleted after the notice period
Contributors are responsible for exporting their own data during the notice period. We will provide instructions and support to make this process as straightforward as possible.
16. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will:
- Post the updated Terms on the Platform with a new effective date
- Notify Contributors via email at least 30 days before the changes take effect
- Clearly summarize what has changed
Your continued use of Codex Vivendi after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms. If you disagree with a change, you may request account deletion before the new Terms take effect.
17. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Sweden, without regard to conflict of law principles.
Any disputes arising from or in connection with these Terms or your use of Codex Vivendi shall be submitted to the exclusive jurisdiction of Gothenburg District Court (Goteborgs tingsratt), Sweden.
Nothing in this section prevents you from filing a complaint with your local data protection authority under GDPR, or from exercising any mandatory consumer rights available to you under the law of your country of residence.
18. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable by a court of competent jurisdiction, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect. The invalid provision shall be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it valid and enforceable while preserving its original intent.
